The Pope is not a Christian. He does not line up under the authority of Scripture. He rejects, adds to, and misconstrues truth with little regard for biblical accuracy. Twisting Scripture to fit his own ideology, he espouses deceptive theology to millions of his followers. Most concerning, is his rejection of the biblical view regarding justification. If the pope died today, believing the doctrine of salvation which he himself as well as the Catholic Church as a whole have taught for centuries, he most certainly will be damned to an eternity in hell separated from the one true and holy God.
The Pope teaches that salvation is attained by faith in Jesus Christ, however, human works are also necessary in order to Justify us before God. He would also hold to the Roman Catholic teaching that baptism plays a key role in salvation, which is one reason why all Catholic children are baptized as infants. Official Catholic teaching, as seen in session 6 of the Council of Trent cannon 9, says this: If anyone says that the sinner is justified by faith alone, meaning that nothing else is required to cooperate in order to obtain the grace of justification, and that it is not in any way necessary that he be prepared and disposed by the action of his own will, let him be anathema. The Pope, along with the rest of the Roman Catholic Church denies the sufficiency of Christ’s death on the cross for our sins.
This flawed view of the doctrine of salvation is in complete opposition to what Scripture teaches. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works so that no one may boast (Eph. 2:8-9).
For a follower of Christ to embrace the Pope in any way, affirming what he teaches, declaring him to be a faithful herald of the word of God, or even accepting him as a Christian with merely different viewpoints on certain things is to exhibit a flagrant disregard for the souls of the men, women, and children who are being led astray by this man’s false gospel. But more importantly it shows an unwillingness to remain faithful to Scripture and to the Lord Jesus Christ in all areas. Unfortunately many evangelical leaders in the Church today have in fact chosen to embrace the Pope, adding to the confusion, blurring the lines between believers and the world, and further compounding the departure from biblical truth and discernment.
This is extremely confusing to many Christians. It does nothing to help cultivate biblical discernment or nurture a clear understanding of what Scripture teaches concerning these things. However it does not have to be this way. Any true follower of Christ who has the indwelling Holy Spirit and is committed to studying the Scriptures daily, is capable of evaluating whether or not what is being accepted as Christian, actually lines up with Scripture. You do not have to possess a doctorate degree in theology in order to weigh current issues against the written word of God. In Acts 17, we see that as Paul and Silas were teaching in the synagogue in Berea, the people there were considered noble because they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so (Acts 17:11).
What the Pope is ultimately doing, is using Christian terminology and even portions of Scripture to dupe millions of people into believing an unbiblical means to salvation. He has exemplified that he either does not understand very basic concepts in Scripture, or willfully chooses to teach doctrine that opposes them. Knowing this, and recognizing that his understanding of the very basis of Christianity is flawed, why would we choose to accept or encourage his behavior in any way?
Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. -1 Corinthians 12:3
The Pope has long deflected attention away from the biblical description pertaining to what the life of a disciple of Christ is to look like, the behavior of one who is truly justified by the crosswork of Christ alone, regenerated, and continually sanctified through the work of the Holy Spirit in their life. Instead, he gives credence to the normality of continued sin in ones life, inability to understand or line up under Scripture, and gross moral and spiritual bankruptcy. Because after all, Jesus death on the cross was a failure, so how can we expect to live a life unstained by the world if Jesus Christ couldn’t even avoid defeat?
Jesus Christ himself tells us, as recorded in the book of Matthew, that we should beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits (Matt. 7:15-20).
“First, if you are to be a faithful prophet in a nation in decline and crisis, you must expose false religion where it exists. This is not a time for tolerance, this is not a time for embracing everybody and saying it doesn’t really matter what you believe as long as you follow your heart. Listen, this world is full of damning false religion. I have been accused throughout the years of being intolerant and I accept that as a compliment. Of course I’m intolerant. I am as intolerant as God is, as Christ is, as the Bible is of anything that damns peoples souls while promising them heaven. It is a direct message. We’re not just talking about making people feel good, we confront lies.” -John MacArthur
The Pope is a false messenger of truth, an idolator, a blasphemer, and a pagan in every sense of the term. This man, like the many who have gone before him, has usurped the headship of Christ over the Church and has perverted the very word of God given to us in Scripture. There is absolutely no room for ecumenism or acceptance of a man who preaches a doctrine which damns men’s souls to hell. If you are led astray by a wrong understanding of biblical salvation, you will end up in hell. It is that serious. Do not forsake faithfulness to Christ and to Scripture by embracing a man who is an enemy of both.
